Mahwira, who teachesbiology at a secondary schooloperated by the EvangelicalLutheran Church in Zimbabwe,knows that hands-on learningis the best way for kids to understand science.They need to be able to perform experiments, seechemical reactions and take three-dimensionalmeasurements, up close. But for a long time, noneof that was possible for his students.Mr. Mahwira%u2019s school is located in a rural areawhere it is hard for everyone to access theeducational resources they need. High schoolattendance rates for boys are especially lowbecause they often need to work to support theirfamilies. The best tools Mr. Mahwira had to teachthe students who made it into his classroom werea chalkboard and some dated videos. He knewthose resources weren%u2019t good enough. His studentswere having trouble understanding the conceptshe was trying to teach them through diagramsand video-recorded experiments. They were fallingbehind, and many were failing their final exams.Things are different in Mr. Mahwira%u2019s classroomnow, thanks to you. Your support for ELCA WorldHunger helped provide the tools his studentsneed to do their best learning. Mr. Mahwira andhis colleagues now have chemical compounds forconducting experiments and calipers for takingprecise measurements. %u201cLife has been made easierwith the availability of the instruments,%u201d he says.His students are becoming more engaged, graspingconcepts they couldn%u2019t understand when they werestaring at scratchy writing on a chalkboard.Your generosity has provided tools to help thesestudents grow in other ways too. With yoursupport, the school has been able to purchaseuniforms and sports equipment including soccerballs, javelins and discuses. As the students playtogether, they build their confidence and teamworkskills. Your gifts have also helped fund the school%u2019scomputer lab, which connects students to the widerworld and prepares them for life after graduation.A higher percentage of Mr. Mahwira%u2019s studentsare passing their final exams now, and he knowsthat the lessons they are learning will stick withthem long after they leave school %u2014 which is moreimportant.
